Low Temps = High Mileage

By admin

Hey all! It’s been a fabulous few days of running, minus one tiny detail — I’ve had to bust out the mittens. It’s that time of year. 47 degrees on Tuesday morning? Not.my.style.at.all.

Of course, the rest of the group is loving it, but NOT me. I actually wore a down jacket to the Y on Tuesday morning to try and lock some heat in before the run.

Nonetheless, we have had a GREAT few days out there. They looked kinda like this:

12-15 fartlek runs, 1min. on w/1min. recoveries.

I promise you — the one-minute recoveries are a HECK of a lot shorter than that one minute 5-10k runs. I don’t know how, but they are. We also started WAY early (4:15 a.m.) which contributed to the difficulty.

I ran the speed work with Mike and Luke, and our mileage looked like this:

Mile 1 (warm-up) – 8:41
Mile 2 – 7:19
Mile 3 – 7:05
Mile 4 – 7:10
Mile 5 – 6:57
Mile 6 – 8:03
Mile 7 – 7:39

Holy heck we were tearing it up. I didn’t realize how quickly we blew through miles 2-5, which were our 4 miles of speed work. Way to go to us!

Mike and Luke had to leave after that, so I met up with Jeremiah and Angie back at the Y and we ran another SIX miles:

Mile 8 – 8:35
Mile 9 – 8:42
Mile 10 – 8:32
Mile 11 – 8:36
Mile 12 – 8:22
Mile 13 – 8:09
Mile 13.5 (for me): 4:00

Total Mileage: 13.5
Total Time: 1:47:56
Avg. Pace: 8:00mm

Quite the workout for a Tuesday morning, right?

Now for today…

Mike, Angie, and Brian started early again — like 4:15. Woof. Jeremiah and I agreed to sleep in and meet at 5 a.m. When I got up, it was ALL I could do to not text J and tell him that I was bailing. But, the beauty of running in pairs of two is that you ALWAYS feel like the bad guy if you bail. So, I didn’t.

Apparently Jeremiah and I were on the same page because he confessed that he was secretly hoping that I was going to bail so that he could go back to bed… same as I was hoping that he would bail. Alas, neither party did, and this is what ended up happening:

Mile 1 – 8:40
Mile 2 – 8:26
Mile 3 – 7:56
Mile 4 – 7:49
Mile 5 – 7:49
Mile 6 – 7:37
Mile 7 – 7:38
Mile 8 – 7:42
Mile 9 – 7:36
Mile 10 – 7:31

Total Mileage – 10
Total Time – 1:18:52
Average Pace – 7:53mm

We definitely didn’t plan to run 10 miles. Our schedule called for an easy 55-65 minutes, but honestly, once we got going, we just decided that it would be easier to run our normal loop. J and I talked the whole time, we’re both pretty long-winded so that’s typically the norm, so it actually went by really quickly! Now that I see our sub-8s, I’m proud of us for passing the talk test at some pretty respectable paces.

This is a pretty boring blog post, what without pictures (GOSH, I really need to figure out how to FIX THIS!) and all this running talk. But, truth be told, there hasn’t been a whole lot going on this week outside of running, working and sleeping. Steven and I had lunch together today, and we met friends out for a happy hour yesterday evening, but that’s about it. I don’t know how much excitement I see in the near future, but I’ll be on the lookout for some!

Take care, friends…
